12th WestLicht Photographica Auction was ended successfully!
On Saturday, the 17th of November 2007 the 12th WestLicht Photographica Auction ended with a sensation: the most spectacular lot of the auction, a 0-Series Leica No. 107 was sold for an unbelievable 336.000 Euros hammer price incl. premium – the highest sum ever achieved at an auction for a 35mm camera or a Leica.
Numerous bidders from all over the world took part in the camera auction including some from Korea, Japan, USA and various parts of Europe. The most recent auction was able to out-shine the high standards of previous auctions both in total turnover as well as the percentage of sold lots. Over 90 % of the total of 823 lots were auctioned off for a total of more than 1.5 million Euros.
World record for a Leica: 336.000 Euros!
By accepting the bid of a privat European collector, the auctioneer turned a slender black camera into the most expensive 35mm camera and the second most expensive camera ever auctioned off!
Only approx. 21 of these cameras were produced to test the market in 1923, 2 years before the commercial introduction of the Leica A. The auctioned camera is the seventh camera of the Leica 0-series. The factory records indicate the delivery to New York for patenting. This means that this camera is not only one of the major rarities existing, it is also the first Leica to be exported.
The existing world record for a camera was also established by a WestLicht Photographica Auction: a Daguerreotype by the Paris manufacturer Susse Frères from 1839, was sold for an unbelievable 580.000 Euros at the auction in May 2007.
The other highlights amongst the Leica lots were the M3 gold no.834000 for 51.600 Euros and a M3 black paint for 22.800 Euros. At this auction also two Leica lenses could achieve remarkable high results: a Summicron 2/5cm Prototype and a Noctilux 1.2/50mm have been sold for 19.200 Euros each. Generally speaking the prices for Leicas and accessories were very solid. Nearly 100% of the Leitz articles were sold and very often the estimates were considerably exceeded.
Also some of the Nikon cameras achieved notable prices: a Stereo-NIKKOR outfit was auctioned for 39.000 Euros and a Nikon F High Speed for 19.200 Euros.
Extremely high increases were also registered in the case of the large selection of stereo lots we offered this time: the famous Hirst and Wood 'The Natural Stereoscope' went for 19.800 Euros and the extremely rare Stereo Sigriste camera was sold for 17.400 Euros. Two previously unknown stereo viewers were also able to achieve record prices: the 'Autosynoptomètre' viewer by Giroux was auctioned for 9.000 Euros the 'Isostereoscopio' by Carlo Ponti by 7.800 Euro.
All price quotes include auction charges. The next WestLicht Photographica Auction will take place in May 2008. |
